About
public being is an independent nonprofit that empowers new artistic initiatives with clear public engagement. Through public art projects in diverse formats, public being activates the social sphere for the benefit of both communities and creators.
Based in Brooklyn, New York City, on Lenape land.
GAPBASE is the first initiative of public being: a placemaking project that brings 24/7 spatial activation to Brooklyn’s most iconic space, Grand Army Plaza, enhancing its role as both a crossroads and a destination. A community-integrated, site-specific public art program that includes a public art residency.
public being partners with Prospect Park Alliance for the GAPBASE initiative. Sited on a lampless base –one of four at the entrance to Prospect Park– the artwork will dialogue with the base and the public, and will incorporate a technological component to enhance its interactive, social character.
The art residency is designed to encourage real public engagement. Programs will be specifically created for educational audiences, from kindergarten to graduate level, while others will be shaped around the involvement of community organizations across Brooklyn, strengthening collaboration and exchange.
